Pickpockets
The Red Light District, tram 2 (the tourist line to Museumplein), Damrak and Centraal Station are the hotspots. Watch for distraction teams — someone bumps you or asks for directions while an accomplice lifts your phone. Keep phones in front pockets or zipped bags, never on cafe tables outdoors, and never in back pockets on crowded trams. Amsterdam's overall crime rate is low but opportunistic theft is real.
Bike theft
80,000 bikes stolen in Amsterdam yearly. If you rent, always use the frame lock plus a heavy chain through the frame and a fixed object. Never leave overnight in the center. Rental shops charge $150-250 for stolen bikes — the insurance option ($3/day) is worth it. If yours is stolen, file a police report immediately for the shop.
Tram and bike traffic
Tourists get hit weekly. The rule: never cross tram tracks parallel to the direction of travel — your wheel or foot will jam. Cross perpendicular. Look both ways on bike paths (the red asphalt) before stepping off a curb — cyclists move fast and don’t yield. In roundabouts, cyclists have right of way over cars.
Red Light District
Legal, regulated, and safe to walk through. Do not photograph the workers in the windows — they will (rightfully) throw something at you and it's illegal. Stay off drugs offered by street dealers; anything sold on the street outside a coffeeshop is unregulated and often dangerous. The area is fine to walk through until 1-2 am, quieter by 3.
