Brown cafes (bruine kroegen)
The Dutch pub — dim, wood-paneled, decades old. Café Chris in the Jordaan (since 1624), Café 't Smalle on Egelantiersgracht (canal terrace), Café de Dokter (tiny, since 1798, smallest bar in the city). Beers $5-6, jenever $4. These are for slow drinks and conversation, not dancing. Close around 1 am weekdays, 3 am weekends.
Clubs
De School (closing 2024, check current program) and its successor venues in West run techno until noon. Shelter under A’DAM Tower does big-room electronic. Melkweg and Paradiso are legendary mid-size concert venues (formerly a dairy and a church). Cover $15-25. Skip Leidseplein clubs like Escape unless you want mainstream and expensive.
Jazz and live music
Bimhuis on Piet Heinkade is Amsterdam's premier jazz venue — $20-30 tickets, world-class program. Café Alto in the Jordaan does free live jazz nightly from 22:00 in a tiny basement (drink minimum applies). Bourbon Street off Leidseplein for blues and covers.
Skip these
The Rembrandtplein strip — chain bars, aggressive bouncers, watered drinks, mostly stag parties. Damrak in general after dark. Any 'Irish pub' inside the canal ring: same beer as everywhere else at 30% markup. Leidseplein's mega-clubs like Escape mostly serve tour groups.
What time locals go out
Borrel (drinks) starts 17:00-19:00 at a brown cafe. Dinner 19:00-21:00. Bars fill 22:00-midnight. Clubs don’t get going until 1 am and run to 4-6 am. Sunday-Tuesday most clubs are dead — plan Thursday-Saturday.

Night trams and buses run hourly until 6 am. Uber and Bolt work 24/7. Trains between towns stop around 1 am with hourly night services on some lines.

De School and similar are casual/streetwear. Some Leidseplein clubs enforce 'smart casual' — no sportswear or shorts. Rarely a real barrier.
