Water and boat rides

The GVB ferries from behind Centraal Station cross the IJ to Amsterdam-Noord free, 24/7. Take the Buiksloterweg for a two-minute crossing to A’DAM Tower (paid observation but free lobby), or NDSM for the 15-minute scenic ride to the former shipyard. Locals commute this way — you get panoramic waterfront views for zero.

Parks and gardens

Vondelpark, 47 hectares of paths, ponds and open-air theater (free concerts Wed-Sun, June-August). The Hortus Botanicus courtyard cafe is free (interior gardens $12). Amsterdamse Bos to the south is 10x larger than Vondelpark with a working goat farm at Ridammerhoeve. Begijnhof, a hidden 14th-century courtyard off Spui, is free 9:00-17:00.

Neighborhoods and street art

The Jordaan's small streets — Bloemgracht, Egelantiersgracht, Prinsenstraat — cost nothing. NDSM-werf across the IJ has some of Europe's best legal graffiti walls, giant industrial art (STRAAT museum is paid but the exterior is free). De Pijp's Sarphatipark and Albert Cuypmarkt are photogenic without an entry fee.

Free museum moments

Rijksmuseum's Cuypers Library (viewable from a mezzanine) is free — just walk into the main atrium. Civic Guards Gallery next door shows massive 17th-century group portraits for free. Stedelijk Museum is free on your birthday with ID. Openbare Bibliotheek Amsterdam (OBA) is a stunning 7-floor library open free daily with a terrace overlooking the harbor.

Questions answered

Are the Amsterdam GVB ferries really free?

Yes, foot passengers and cyclists free, 24/7, no ticket needed. Cars pay on the IJmeer routes but tourists don’t need those.

Can I visit the Rijksmuseum for free?

Not the galleries. But the atrium, Cuypers Library view, gift shop and gardens are free public access.

Are there free walking tours?

Yes — SANDEMANs, FreeDam and Free Walking Tours Amsterdam all run daily from Dam Square. Tip $10-15 per person if you enjoyed it.

Is Vondelpark open at night?

Yes, 24 hours. Well-lit main paths and generally safe until midnight; use judgment after that.
