Getting there
Bus 315 from Amsterdam Centraal (bay E) to Marken runs every 30 minutes, takes 40 minutes and costs $6.50. From Marken, seasonal 'Marken Express' boats to Volendam cross the Gouwzee every 30-45 minutes April to October, $12.50 return. Or take bus 316 back through Amsterdam-Noord to Volendam.
Marken
A former island now connected by a 1957 causeway. The village is car-free inside — you’ll park at the entrance and walk. Look at Havenbuurt for the green wooden houses on stilts, and Kerkbuurt for the older, more residential lanes. It's small: an hour is enough. Wooden clog workshop Marken Klompen does free demos daily, and you can climb the Paard van Marken lighthouse for $4.
Volendam
Bigger, brighter red rooftops, and packed with day-trippers. The harbor is lined with fish stalls — get smoked eel or kibbeling (fried cod) at Frank's Smokehouse for $7. The Volendams Museum ($6) is small but shows traditional dress in context.
Skip the paid photo shoots in traditional costume unless it appeals — they’re $25 and heavily marketed. Ferry back or take bus 110 to Amsterdam Centraal, which runs every 15 minutes.
