Getting there

What to do
The Marinemuseum at Willemsoord (former Royal Navy yard) is the main draw. $18 gets you aboard a Cold War submarine, a minesweeper and a 19th-century ironclad. Kids under 12 half price. Next door, Nationaal Reddingmuseum Dorus Rijkers ($14) covers Dutch sea-rescue history — surprisingly gripping.
The Wadden coast at Huisduinen has the country's oldest lighthouse, Lange Jaap (1878), 63.5 meters. You can only look from outside, but the beach north of it is empty even in August.
Food and combining
Lunch at Villa Zeezicht on the boulevard — herring platter $12, mussel pot in season $22. For coffee and cake, Café Molenzicht near the harbor. Most day-trippers combine Den Helder with the Texel ferry (20 minutes across) and see both in one long day. If you skip Texel, three hours is enough for the town.
