Albert Cuypmarkt, Amsterdam
The country's largest daily street market, running along Albert Cuypstraat in De Pijp. 260 stalls, Monday-Saturday 9:00-17:00. Come for fresh stroopwafels ($2.50), Turkish pizza ($4), cheese (Beemster Oud $12/kg), and cheap textiles. Avoid the touristy fridge magnet stalls at the eastern end.
Noordermarkt and Lindengracht, Amsterdam
Two Jordaan markets. Noordermarkt runs Monday (flea/vintage 9:00-14:00) and Saturday (organic farmers 9:00-16:00) on the square. Lindengracht is Saturday only, 9:00-16:00, a proper Dutch neighborhood market with fresh fish, poultry and flowers. Coffee at Toki around the corner while you shop.
Ten Katemarkt, Amsterdam
Oud-West's daily market (Mon-Sat, closed Sun), less touristed than Albert Cuyp. Great for produce, olives, and Surinamese roti stalls. Directly next to Foodhallen if you want to combine street market with covered food hall.
Bloemenmarkt, Amsterdam
The floating flower market on the Singel between Muntplein and Koningsplein. Tulip bulbs, seeds and cut flowers daily 9:00-17:30. Mostly geared to tourists now — bulbs are cheaper at Albert Heijn — but the setting on canal barges is unique.
Alkmaar cheese market
Fridays 10:00-13:00, April through the first Friday of September, at Waagplein. Free to watch the guild porters race wheels of Gouda across the square. Not for buying — go to the stalls around the square for cheese purchases.
