Why no car actually works here
Noord-Holland has the densest train network in the country and the OV-chipkaart or a contactless bank card works on every train, bus, tram and ferry. The only genuine transport gaps are inside dune reserves and on Texel outside the two main villages. For everything else, public transport is faster than driving because it skips Amsterdam parking. A 5-day plan needs about €55 in transit costs plus optional day tickets.
The 5-day spine
Day 1: fly into Schiphol, train to Haarlem (40 minutes with change at Sloterdijk), sleep in Haarlem. Day 2: Sprinter to Zandvoort (11 minutes) morning, back to Haarlem, afternoon in the city on foot. Day 3: train Haarlem to Alkmaar (36 minutes) for the Friday cheese market, then Alkmaar to Hoorn (30 minutes), sleep in Hoorn. Day 4: Hoorn to Enkhuizen (18 minutes) for the Zuiderzeemuseum, then back via Amsterdam Centraal to Volendam by bus 316 (40 minutes), sleep in Volendam. Day 5: bus 316 to Amsterdam Noord, ferry (free, 4 minutes) to Centraal, train to Schiphol.
This spine hits 8 places, uses zero car hours, and the longest single journey is 55 minutes. Book nothing except hotels; all transport is turn-up-and-go.
Fares and passes
For 5 days, contactless bank card pay-as-you-go is cheapest at around €55 total. The Amsterdam and Region Travel Ticket (€22 for 24 hours, €35 for 72 hours) covers all buses, trams, metros and trains within the region including to Zaanse Schans, Volendam and Marken but NOT Alkmaar, Hoorn or Zandvoort beyond Haarlem. So buy it for one Waterland day only. For Texel, the €12 return TESO ferry ticket is separate; walk-on or bring a bike.
Questions answered
Can I reach Texel without a car?
Yes. Train to Den Helder (from Amsterdam 1h 15min), 5-minute walk to the ferry, 20-minute crossing. On the island, Texelhopper buses connect all villages every 30 minutes.
Do buses run late enough for dinner?
Most rural buses stop by 22:00 or 23:00. Trains between Haarlem, Alkmaar and Amsterdam run until 01:00. Plan late dinners in cities, early dinners in villages.
