Why industry, not castles
Noord-Holland has almost no castles and no mountains. What it has is the earliest industrial landscape on earth. By 1650, the Zaan region had over 600 industrial windmills grinding cocoa, sawing timber and pressing linseed oil, decades before Britain's coal-fired revolution. Combined with the VOC ports of Hoorn, Enkhuizen and Amsterdam and the vast dyke and lock engineering that reclaimed the land itself, this is a region built on machines and hydraulics, not knights.
Day 1: Zaanse Schans, Amsterdam docks, IJmuiden locks
Start at Zaanse Schans (train from Amsterdam, 17 minutes). Focus on De Kat paint mill and De Zoeker oil mill, both still operating commercially. Continue to Amsterdam and the Scheepvaartmuseum (€17.50), the Dutch maritime museum with a full-scale VOC ship replica moored outside. Late afternoon, take the bus 82 to IJmuiden (45 minutes) to see the sea locks, the largest in the world by volume since 2022. Sleep at Hotel Augusta in IJmuiden or back in Haarlem.
Day 2: Enkhuizen and the Zuiderzee story
Train from Haarlem to Enkhuizen (1h 15min via Amsterdam). Spend the morning at the Zuiderzeemuseum outdoor section (€19.50), which reconstructs the fishing towns wiped out when the Afsluitdijk was closed in 1932. The indoor section covers herring smoking, shipbuilding and the collapse of the Zuiderzee economy. Afternoon, drive or take the bus 137 to Den Oever and walk out onto the Afsluitdijk itself, the 32 km closure dam that created the IJsselmeer. Sleep at Van der Valk Hoorn on the way back.

Are the Zaanse Schans mills real or reconstructions?
Real. They were moved there from other Zaan locations in the 1960s and 70s but were built as working industrial mills, not tourist decor. Several still produce paint pigment and oil commercially.
Is the Afsluitdijk worth the detour?
Only if you like large infrastructure. It is 32 km of straight causeway with a visitor centre halfway. Add 3 hours round trip from Enkhuizen.
