The daily numbers
Bed in a StayOkay hostel dorm: $32-$38. Groceries at Albert Heijn or Jumbo: $10 (bread, cheese, apples, a rotisserie chicken split over two meals). One coffee or beer: $4. Total: $50, tight but doable. You’ll cook lunches and picnic on canals or dunes. This works in Haarlem, Alkmaar, Zaandam, Enkhuizen and Texel. In central Amsterdam it does not — dorms alone hit $55+ in summer.
Transport on the cheap
Get an OV-chipkaart or use contactless bank card ($1 base + $0.20 per km on trains, $2.20 tram fare in Amsterdam). Better: buy a $22 NS day-ticket on quieter days and see three towns. Bike rental is $12-$15 a day and often replaces transit entirely. Walking the canal ring in Amsterdam is free and takes hours.
Free things worth doing
Rijksmuseum garden is free (the fenced sculpture area outside the museum). Vondelpark, Zaanse Schans village, all beaches, the Begijnhof, most churches, the free Sunday ferry across the IJ. Museums with Museumkaart ($85 for a year) become effectively free after 4 visits.

Is $50 possible in Amsterdam city center?
Barely — you’ll need a hostel dorm and to skip alcohol and museums that day. Better to base in Haarlem and day-trip.
Is tap water safe and free?
Excellent tap water. Restaurants sometimes charge $2 for it but you can ask for it plainly.
