Transport: mostly good, with caveats
All Amsterdam GVB trams are low-floor with level boarding at raised platforms, and the metro is fully step-free with lifts at every station. NS trains have retractable ramps but you must book assistance at least one hour ahead via the NS Reisassistentie service (free). Schiphol is genuinely excellent: step-free from plane to train platform, with staff assistance bookable through your airline.
Regional buses (Connexxion, EBS) are wheelchair-accessible but rural stops sometimes lack raised kerbs. The ferries to Texel (TESO) and across the IJ in Amsterdam are step-free and free for foot passengers including wheelchair users.
The city centres: mixed reality
Amsterdam's canal belt is UNESCO-listed and therefore stuck with narrow, cobbled, sloping pavements and stepped canal-house entrances. Many boutique hotels in gables have no lift and steep 17th-century staircases; check for 'lift' explicitly when booking. The Rijksmuseum, Van Gogh Museum, Stedelijk, Anne Frank House (partial), NEMO and Micropia are all fully accessible.
Haarlem, Alkmaar and Hoorn have flatter, wider streets but similar cobble problems in the oldest cores. Zaandam and modern parts of Amsterdam Noord and Zuidas are the easiest terrain in the region.
Beaches, nature and toilets
Zandvoort, Bloemendaal aan Zee, Egmond aan Zee and Wijk aan Zee offer free beach wheelchairs (strandrolstoel) in summer; reserve via the local tourist office a day ahead. Boardwalks reach the sand at most main beach entrances. Texel's dune paths are paved for the main routes but sandy off-track.
Accessible public toilets exist at all major stations, museums and shopping centres, most requiring a Euro-key or a 50-70 cent coin. The HogeNood app maps every accessible public toilet in the Netherlands.

Can I rent an accessible hotel room easily?
Modern chains (NH, Van der Valk, Inntel, Mercure, Park Inn) reliably have accessible rooms. Independent canal-house hotels often do not. Filter for 'accessible room' on booking sites and confirm by email.
Are canal cruises accessible?
Yes: several operators including Blue Boat, Lovers and Stromma have step-free boats with dedicated wheelchair spaces. Book ahead and mention it when reserving.
