When you definitely don’t need one

If your trip is Amsterdam-based with day trips to Haarlem, Zaandam, Zaanse Schools, Volendam, Marken, Alkmaar, Hoorn, Enkhuizen, Zandvoort or Muiden, skip the rental. All are reachable by direct train or bus in under an hour from Amsterdam Centraal, and Amsterdam itself is actively hostile to cars: 7.50 euros per hour street parking, one-way canal grids, and near-zero parking at hotels under four stars.

The trains run every 15-30 minutes into the evening, contactless bank-card tap-in/tap-out means no ticket hassle, and a day of unlimited regional travel on the GVB/Connexxion day ticket runs 9-16 euros.

When a car genuinely helps

Texel is easier with a car, though the island is small enough (24 km long) that renting a bike on arrival works too. The dune villages north of Bergen (Schoorl, Camperduin, Petten) are bus-served but sparsely, and a car turns a full-day expedition into a half-day. Same for chaining together the Beemster polder windmills, Fort Pampus and De Rijp on a single day.

If you’re travelling with three or four people, staying rurally, or arriving with heavy luggage from Schiphol to a village hotel, the car maths starts to work. Rental is 35-60 euros per day, plus 2 euros per litre for petrol.

The compromise: P+R

Amsterdam's P+R scheme is the smartest option for car-borne visitors. Park at Sloterdijk, Zeeburg, Noord or Olympisch Stadion for 1-8 euros per 24 hours including return public transport for up to five people. You must enter and leave the city by public transport (validated by tapping in within an hour of parking).

For a family of four doing three days in Amsterdam, this beats central parking by 200+ euros and beats not-having-a-car by roughly the cost of an ice cream.
