Where cards are the only option
Albert Heijn supermarkets, HEMA, many Amsterdam bakeries, most museums and all NS ticket machines are card-only or heavily prefer card. You’ll see 'pin only' or 'contactless only' stickers on doors. Apple Pay and Google Pay work everywhere a card does. American Express is widely refused; Visa and Mastercard are universal.
One catch worth knowing: Dutch card terminals historically ran on the local Maestro network, and some smaller shops still show 'no credit cards' signs meaning they only take debit. In practice, any contactless Visa or Mastercard debit or credit works at 99% of terminals in 2026.
When cash still helps
Outdoor markets (Albert Cuyp in Amsterdam, the Alkmaar cheese market stalls, Beverwijkse Bazaar), some public toilets that cost 70 cents, tip jars, buskers, and the occasional village frituur are cash-friendly or cash-only. Church donation boxes and small-town parking meters can also be finicky with foreign cards.
50 to 100 euros in small notes covers a week comfortably for most travellers. ATMs (Geldmaat, the yellow ones) are common but charge nothing on the Dutch side; your home bank sets the fee. Avoid Euronet ATMs in tourist areas, which offer terrible exchange rates.
Dynamic currency conversion trap
When paying by foreign card, the terminal often asks whether you want to be charged in euros or your home currency. Always pick euros. The 'home currency' option (dynamic currency conversion) adds a 3-7% margin that goes to the merchant's payment provider, not your bank. Your own bank's rate is almost always better.
Same rule at ATMs: decline the conversion and take the amount in euros. This one habit saves more money on a two-week trip than any other single tip.
